This week’s Haute Cocktail is an Ice Wine Martini, better known as a Skylon Martini at Skylon Tower. On my birthday trip to Niagara Falls, Canada I had the pleasure to try Ice Wine. I had heard of it before on Twitter, and had been really curious about it ever since. So, it was a great birthday gift from destiny to cross my path with lots of Ice Wine. This dessert wine is made by collecting the frozen grapes at night. This way the water in them is frozen but not the sugars, producing a very sweet wine.
I loved the sweet taste of this wine, as my sweet tooth would have predicted, and quickly proceeded to buy myself a bottle as a birthday gift to myself. These wines come in smaller bottles and their uniqueness is reflected in the price. It is suggested to drink it in small pours of 2-3 oz. and/or mix it with other things like champagne or vodka. While doing some vineyard hopping, we made friends with Stephanie Arsenault from Riverview Cellars. She actually suggested adding Ice Wine as one of the ingredients to a Cosmopolitan, naming it the Canadian Cosmo. I will be giving this one a try soon!
This week’s cocktail is a mix of sweet Ice Wine with vodka. The Ice Wine is actually so sweet that it overpowers the vodka, so the vodka is mainly used to add more volume and alcohol content to the drink. I tried this concoction on my birthday dinner with the boyfriend at Skylon Tower‘s restaurant overlooking the Niagara Falls. I’ll be sharing some pictures and anecdotes from the trip in an upcoming post, so stay tuned! In the meantime, track down a bottle of Ice Wine and make this cocktail on your next big or… small celebration. Salud!
