My bucket list has written in caps lock, TRAVEL THE WORLD. That’s why for my 30th birthday all I wanted to do was to travel somewhere I had never been before. It could have been to absolutely anywhere! My boyfriend took matters in his own hands and planned a surprise birthday trip for me to Niagara Falls in Ontario, Canada. We started our road trip on Tuesday morning, and it took us 7-8 hours to get there including stops. I literally had no clue where we were going until we crossed the border, and he pointed to the Niagara Falls. It was really funny, all I could see was the mist of the water. I thought it was a big fire somewhere (the mist of the water sort of looks like smoke). After crossing the border we drove to our hotel, the Niagara Falls Marriott Fallsview Hotel and Spa. They are right in front of the Niagara Falls, so our room had a spectacular view that I enjoyed every single morning and night. At night they are illuminated with changing colored lights, so you can still admire them until 10pm. We also had a fireplace and a jacuzzi tub. It was a really comfy room perfect to experience and explore Niagara Falls, or to just stay in and enjoy the view.
That first night was spent exploring our surroundings, stocking up the room’s fridge with wine and resting to start our first day in Niagara Falls the next morning. (Read more about the bottle of Ice Wine I got for myself as a birthday gift and a recipe to try with it here.) The next morning we tried the continental breakfast included with our stay, and I have to say that the variety was great and everything tasted really good. You can easily have a different breakfast every day of your stay! Afterwards we killed time at the Casino in the hotel next door, before meeting with our tour group. The tour took us to see the Niagara Falls up close and go behind them, where sadly it was mostly ice at this time. Regardless, it was a majestic view when we got to see them so close. We had a break to have lunch and pick up souvenirs, before heading to the Butterfly Conservatory. It was so beautiful to walk among so many types of butterflies, if you are ever able to do something like this I highly recommend the experience. The tour ended with a visit to the top floor of the Skylon Tower to see the Niagara Falls from way up high.
That day was my actual birthday, so at night my boyfriend had made reservations at the Skylon Tower‘s restaurant. It is a revolving restaurant where you can enjoy the 360 degree view of the Niagara Falls and the town. You can also have an amazing meal. I mean, everything we ordered was great! I had one lobster tail with broccoli and mashed potatoes and we ordered caramelized onions to share. This year my second birthday cake was a slice of creamy cheesecake.
It was a long day of sightseeing and celebrating, and also a Wednesday, so after dinner we made our way back to our room to relax and sleep before a day of wine tastings and vineyard hopping. Stay tuned for the recap of day two of my birthday trip to Ontario, Canada.
