During the past couple of months I’ve been digging through the X-Files of my closet in order to find something “new” to wear. To my delight, I rediscovered this yellow dress with a black lace overlay that I got from Modcloth years ago. It makes for the perfect summer dress to wear for special events, day or night. Read more on why it is a great idea to shop your own closet, plus tips on styling a too-big-on-you dress.
This summer, as I’ve been aiming to save money, I haven’t been shopping for clothing as much, or at all, actually. This was so the whole summer until recently, when I said: “This is ridiculous! I need to treat myself to something new. I need it, and deserve it!” So, I went ahead and shopped for a couple of new items to wear for some events I have, including this leopard print skater skirt.
On the other hand, because I’ve lost a bit of weight in the last year, the clothes I already own (including the ones I bought last summer) are looking ridiculously big on me. I know, this is a very good problem to have, however it is extremely annoying to want to look put together in your clothes and feeling more like you are wearing some sort of potato sack or circus tent. “If you got it, flaunt it!” and that’s a mission when extra inches of fabric compromise this goal. However, there are a couple of tricks that you can use to make those pieces fit better, so you can flaunt those curves without having to buy a brand new wardrobe.

When I first bought this dress, it flatten my boobs, and the lining by the hips was very tight on me. For this reason, I wore it maybe twice before it quickly disappeared into the twilight zone of my closet. When I uncovered it this summer, I was pleasantly surprised to find out that not only my boobs have room to breathe, but my hips do, too. On the flip side, now the waist is very big on me. So, somewhere along the way, I sort of missed my perfect fit window with this dress. However, this fact didn’t stop me from wearing it to host the red carpet of the LMX DJ Choice Awards for Latin-e or to attend a special brunch in the city.
Here is what I did to make it fit better… For the top, I reached for a padded bra to fill the dress a bit more. Thankfully, this frock has adjustable straps, so that helps, too! Lastly, so my body is not completely hidden in inches of extra fabric, I added a leather belt to accentuate the waist, and voila! To make my look more 2014, I paired the dress with a pair of fun blue mirrored sunglasses that Choies Clothing sent me with a bright orange lipstick from NYX Cosmetics. Hello, sunshine!
