Smile, we’re taking a group selfie! How do you feel about your smile and the color of your teeth? I strongly believe that our face is such an important element of who we are and how we present ourselves to the world. That’s why we want perfect skin, and pretty hair, and… a whiter smile. I had the chance to go to The Dental Parlour, a super fabulous dental office in New York City, to learn more about how to take better care of my smile. Keep reading for tips on improving the whiteness of your teeth, and to see how my in-office teeth whitening treatment went. (Spoiler Alert! I’m all smiles ever since.)
The first thing I learned when I stepped foot at The Dental Parlour was uttered more than once by Cosmetic and General Dentist, Sivan Finkel, DMD, who is the other half of this Father/Son dental office. He said: “Everything that can stain a white shirt, will stain your teeth.” Thank you, Sivan, for the instant crash diet. However, there is no need to avoid all of your favorite foods that might compromise the white of your teeth. We shall live, enjoy and smile with very white teeth even after all those bottles of red wine! (Talking about wine… Did you know that white wine will stain your teeth more than red wine will? It’s an acidity thing, so the white will penetrate your teeth more, while the red will just stain the surface. Bye, bye white… Hello, red!)
Hopefully by now you are aware that it is imperative to brush your teeth (a soft brush is better to protect the enamel of your pearly whites), floss and rinse with mouthwash. These three steps, done the right way, will have your teeth feeling stronger, healthier and shinier. However, you should also start thinking of incorporating a whitening regimen. Even though there are a lot of whitening treatment options out there, the best way is through a dental office. The procedure will be personalized to your teeth and will get your smile whiter faster.
I had been thinking about starting a whitening regimen when I was invited to check out The Dental Parlour. It was the perfect timing, plus the most fun and elegant dental office I have ever been to. The team is also amazing, so you will always feel at home! My friend Aminta from Clothes and Fashion and I made appointments together, you know, for moral support and to keep each other from walking straight into a pizzeria or coffee shop afterwards. The treatment started with an assessment of the whiteness of my teeth. (There is a chart for you to see where you are starting, and then compare the final results!) A foam was applied to create a mold of my mouth. It’s cool, comfy and I called it a teeth cloud bed. Everyone should experience putting their teeth on a cloud bed…
When my turn came to start the actual whitening treatment, the dental hygienist, Anna, proceeded to help me place my mouth in a contraption that I like to call ‘The Butterfly’. This helps keep your mouth open and teeth completely visible to apply the whitening gel. You also get to wear a pair of red glasses to protect your eyes. So, you’ll be looking selfie ready from the very beginning. (That was me being sarcastic, by the way.) The whitening gel is applied 3-4 times in intervals of 15 minutes, so be ready to be at the dental office for an hour to hour an a half for this type of treatment. I kept myself entertained doing some social media on my phone and dancing to the awesome playlist they had on. Aminta went for the cinematic route, but you’ll have to read her post here to learn more about that.
When the full procedure was finalized, we got a set of trays made of the exact shape of our teeth (that magical cloud was responsible for this) for us to continue whitening at home whenever we need a little extra sparkle. I’m going for every week to two weeks. These come with a 35% hydrogen peroxide whitening gel that you apply in the trays, and wear for 30 minutes. This is better done at night after brushing your teeth, so you don’t feel tempted to eat anything that might stain your teeth. The same applies for the in-office treatment, so when making your appointment, you have to feel at peace with the fact that for the next 24 hours you shouldn’t stuff your face with anything that might leave a souvenir stain on your teeth.
I totally recommend an in-office whitening treatment to anyone looking to have a whiter smile! Now is the perfect time, too, with all those summer activities coming, and that sun tan that will make your teeth look even whiter. I also totally recommend letting Dr. Myron Finkel and Dr. Sivan Finkel be the ones to take your teeth to new and whiter heights. You can pay them a visit at The Dental Parlour 434 E 57th St. in New York, NY. The in-office treatment costs $750, the personalized at-home system is $450, and the gel refills are $40-$50.
*Thanks to Victory PR and The Dental Parlour for having me and treating me and Aminta to a whiter smile!
