Sweet Home Alabama, where the skies are so blue! That was probably the first thing you thought of when the word Alabama flashed up, right? Same here! A trip down south to the Heart of Dixie would be so fun, but before I start plotting, I wanted to find something beyond the friendly townsfolk and delve into the history and feel of the place. You could spend a vacation in Alabama taking in the glorious sunshine and kicking back with a nice refreshing cocktail, but what is there in terms of the museums and places to get a bit more culture in, while also operating on a healthy budget? It may sound difficult, but it can be done!
The Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum
One for the boyfriends, but it’s actually quite interesting! Those that enjoy going on a road trip may want to take in the sights of over 600 vintage motorcycles, shipped in from all over the world. There are many car museums in the USA, but not many that focus on motorcycles, but if you wanted to get your car fix too, they display a range of cars, mainly Lotus racecars, but the bikes are the star attraction here, and yes, there are plenty of Harley Davidsons, 97 to be precise!
The Little River Canyon Trail
If you’re looking for a way to get back to nature and enjoy all the outdoor wonder that Alabama has to offer, you should try the Little River Canyon Trail. Little River Canyon is a spectacular piece of land, which exceeds 600 feet in depth in parts, and is one of the deepest canyons east of the Mississippi River. The Little River mostly flows along a high mountain and goes from Northwestern Georgia to Weiss Lake, guaranteeing an amazing view of natural beauty. There are varied species of plants and animals for the nature lover, but if you are looking for some activities to do while you are there, you can go whitewater rafting, as well as climbing and swimming. Or if you are feeling in a more tranquil mood, you can go fishing!
The State Theater
A weekend in Alabama is not complete without a trip to the theater! The Alabama Shakespeare Festival, to use its proper name, works to get theater to all walks of life, showing that it’s not just for the elite! The theater itself is the largest professional theater company in the state and works with many community outreach programs and unproduced playwrights to bring the latest pieces of contemporary stage productions to life. Based in Montgomery, you can enjoy Shakespeare’s classics ‘The Two Gentlemen Of Verona’ and ‘The Tempest’ alongside other classics such as ‘Mary Poppins’, ‘A Sherlock Holmes Adventure’, and newer works like ‘Because Of Winn-Dixie’. There really is something for everyone!
Looking for the best activities in Alabama isn’t really hard, and these three different types of adventure show that whatever you want to do, Alabama really has something for all walks of life.
